Our Mission

The mission of the UNC Japanese History Lab is to engage in collaborative learning and research about the Japanese past in a global context. We aim to learn from each other, support each other, and challenge each other in intellectually meaningful and personally sustainable ways. We value mentorship; we value difference; and we value collaboration.

Scholarship is better with a diverse team. We believe that effective historical teaching and research requires diversity to address problems of understanding, representation, and methodology from unique perspectives.

The Lab unequivocally supports and respects the complex identities of our members and partners, including age, race, ethnicity, ability, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, political affiliation, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, and other characteristics that are meaningful to us.
